Plymouth Rocks are a breed that originated in the United States during the 19th century. For much of the early 20th century, Plymouth Rocks were the most popular chicken breed. Although their numbers have been eclipsed by production birds, Plymouth Rocks are still very popular among small-flock owners for their early maturity, winter egg laying, cold-hardiness and robustness. Plymouth Rocks have several color patterns, including Partridge.
Louis A. Stahmer (1875-1938) was a nationally known poultry breeder, judge and artist. For his paintings, he used the first prize winners at poultry shows in New York, Boston and Chicago as models, conforming to the new 1923 Standard of Perfection.
The WATT Global Media collection of poultry breed paintings (1926-1950) is the largest single collection of rare poultry breed portraits worldwide. The complete collection is comprised of 57 framed oil paintings of different poultry breeds created by three American artists, A.O. Schilling, L. Stahmer and F.L. Sewell, and was commissioned by J.W. Watt, founder of Watt Publishing Company in the mid-1920s.
